NMRHA Derby 2012
Open to 3, 4, and 5 Year Olds!
Money added will be 60% of Stallion Services Sold
To be held in conjuction with the 2012 Morgan Grand National.
The NMRHA Derby is a promotion to award money to nominated 3, 4 & 5 year old reiners showing in the Grand National Championship Snaffle Bit/Hackamore Reining Class. It is open to nominated three, four and five year olds. There are two divisions: Open and Non Pro. Any three, four or five year old Morgan reiner can enter the Derby! The entry does not have to be sired by a sire in the NMRHA Sire & Dam Program. There are no restrictions so if you have a three, four or five year old Morgan reiner, you can enter the Derby! You pay your money, you get to enter! When do you have to enter the Derby? You must enter the Derby before the first reining class goes into the ring at the Grand National. But REMEMBER.. you can SAVE $$$$ by entering by May 31 of your reiner's competition year! Do you need to do paper work or anything else before their competition year? Not a thing! The Derby is not a class unto itself. Derby horses must go to the Morgan World Championship show in Oklahoma City in October and show in the Grand National’s Championship Snaffle Bit/Hackamore Reining class. The scores they receive from that class are then ranked against each Derby contestant. Highest score takes home the biggest money! Derby babies can be nominated for free but you do have to enter them on time or pay the late penalty fee. Half price nomination fees available to stallion owners who sold a breeding through the NMRHA Sire and Dam Program in 2012.

2008
This year's NMRHA trophy award was again donated to honor the Jackson Morgan Horse Ranch of Harrison, Montana. In 1963 Dean Jackson spearheaded the founding of the National Morgan Cutting Horse Association. In addition to cutting, this Association developed specific Morgan reining patterns so the Morgan horses could be shown as reiners as well as cutting horses. Dean’s leadership laid a very firm foundation to exhibit the ability of the Morgan Horse as a working ranch horse. The Jackson ranch had used Morgan horses for over 50 years giving Dean his enthusiasm for the breed. Dean’s untimely death a few years later did not interrupt the activities of the MCHA. Dean’s brother Bill became actively involved, donating cattle to MCHA events held in Bozeman, Montana. Bill had several ranch stallions trained as reiners and competed at the Grand National with good success. Therefore, the NMRHA would like to honor the Jackson family for their foresight in promoting the Morgan as a working cattle horse. Dean and Bill worked tirelessly in different ways to spotlight the Morgan and deserve our recognition.

NMRHA Derby 2006 Results
This year’s Open Derby again had some great entries! Travis Filipek’s palomino stallion, W Nugget’s Rebels Are We, ridden by Clinton Schiell, scored a scorching 142 ½ to garner the Championship! Reserve went to Disco Patricia ridden by Josette Conti for owners Joseph & Ellen Palillo. Damon Odom’s Atakapa Billy’s Bad Boy ridden by Mark Wilcher was third in the money followed by Duane, Shirley & Tane’ Burris’ pretty mare, Desired Illusion. Finishing out the winners were Jon & Sherry Rivers’ River Riders Rowdy with Richard Bowden up and Waylynn’s Charm ridden by Mark Wilcher and owned by WayLynn Kerr. This year’s Non Pro Derby was won by Shawn Gallagher riding his mare, CBMF Gift of Gold.
The NMRHA Derby Sire Jackpot offers prize money to stallions siring our Derby winners! To qualify, stallions are donated to the Derby who then sells one breeding for half price. This money helps fund the Derby. Stallions who have breedings sold through the program qualify for entry into that year’s Sire Jackpot. The highest scoring offspring of a Derby stallion wins the Championship and money payout for that stallion’s owner! This year the Derby Sire Champion was Triple S Nugget, sire of W Nugget’s Rebels Are We. Triple S Nugget is a National Champion Morgan Reiner in his own right who has garnered multiple championships right here in OKC! He is owned by Travis Filipek Westernesse Morgan Reiners, of Oregon, WI. Reserve went to Twin Pond Disco Kid, sire of Disco Patricia! Disco Kid is also a past World Champion reiner himself who has garnered multiple World Championships here at the Morgan World Show. He is owned by Karen Myers, Myers Performance Horse, Colesville, NY.

NMRHA Derby 2005 Results
Saturday morning brought the Snafflebit/Hackamore horses back for their World Championship. All entries were cross-entered in the NMRHA Derby so lots of money was on the line! The NMRHA Derby is a program to allow our young reining horses to win some big money. In order to encourage owners to spend the time, money and energy on training and showing their Morgans, the NMRHA Derby offers paybacks of $4500 and more! The Derby is not a class unto itself but rather uses the scores from the Grand National World Championship Snafflebit/Hackamore class to pin the winners. Recently the Derby has been open to only 4 and 5 year old reiners but as of 2006, it will be open to 3,4 and 5 year old reiners! This year’s Open winners were Champion Heartquest Rachel (Devicter Grayson Regent x Fortunes Roxanne) owned by Leroy Stockton and ridden by Mark Wilcher. Rachel went home with $2035 in cash, the coveted Tedwin Topic Memorial Trophy Buckle donated by Sherry Cole, trophy, ribbon and trophy blanket! Second in the Open division was WayLynn’s Charm (WCK Bold Eagle x Triplea Finessa). This mare brought home $1357 in cash for owner WayLynn Kerr! Charm was also ridden by Mark Wilcher. The Non Pro Champion was Rough Diamond Rock My Sox (Kerry Aristocrat x Shawalla Night Wind) owned and ridden by Phillip Meredith. Phillip took home $718 as well as trophy, ribbon, and trophy blanket! Reserve Champion was CBMF Gift of Gold earning $479 for owner/rider Shawn Gallagher! A great showing by all! Make sure you get on the band wagon next year and get a piece of the prize money!
