The NMRHA Morgan Youth Reining Challenge is sponsored by The National Morgan Reining Horse Association. It is run similar to the NMRHA Derby. There is no entry fee but entry forms must be submitted to NMRHA for the Challenge. The youth entry must then compete at the Morgan Grand National in the Non Pro Youth Reining Class in OKC in October. Placings of the Challenge entries would be made using the scores from this class. At the GN, youth riders do not have to own their own horses. This will make it a little easier for the riders to "get their feet wet" in reining. Ties are broken using least total number of penalty points. Zero scores will place! Come and join the fun next year!

The Youth Reining Challenge has become great fun for the kids and is very entertaining to watch. Unlike the NRHA youth classes, our kids do not have to own their own horse. This allows more kids to participate and enjoy the fun! The NMRHA also provides extra money to all competitors who perform maneuvers correctly! The reining patterns are broken down into maneuvers including turn arounds, stops, and circles in a variety of different sequences. Each pattern has approximately 8 maneuvers in it. Each maneuver is judged separately and is judged free of penalty points if it is done correctly. As every rookie rider knows, there are way too many places to obtain penalty points! Turn your horse an 1/8 too much or too little in a spin…penalty points. Lead change not exactly at the center…penalty points. Didn’t run past the marker for the stop…penalty points. Trot out of a rollback…penalty points (just to name a few!) So, for each maneuver the kids complete with no penalty points, NMRHA awards them $5. A pattern with 8 maneuvers could earn them $40 and if there are 2 judges, double that to $80!

Our youth riders tied in their reining patterns so the NMRHA Youth Reining Challenge was decided by most penalty-free maneuvers! Coming out on top was Zach Roe with Reserve going to Jerry Acklin. Congratulations to both and we hope to see them both back next year!

2005 Youth Reining Challenge Results

This year’s Champion was Joann Ace riding W’s Ready To Rumble! Joann took home the $500 Championship prize as well as a check for $60 representing $5 for each penalty-free maneuver she did during her reining pattern! Reserve Championship and $250 was won by James Gallagher riding Challie’s Firethorn. James also took home a check for $55 for his penalty-free maneuvers. Third place of $100 went to Phillip Meredith and Rough Diamond Rock My Sox. Phillip also took home $50 for his penalty-free maneuvers! Fourth, fifth and sixth places went to Shawn Gallagher riding Drumlin Carol, Tatum Willard riding River Riders Rainmaker, and Caitlin Harrison riding Wintermoon Waltz With Me. Great class of kids and reiners!
